My mother seems depressed during the holiday season. Could her bad hearing be part of the problem?

Of course, there are many reasons people experience the “holiday blues”. One contributing factor which could be overlooked is hearing loss. Hearing loss has been linked to depression because poor hearing can result in isolation.  When you are always struggling to understand in social situations, it is hard to enjoy the party. Often, people with untreated hearing loss start declining invitations and avoiding group gatherings and religious services. Over time, the individual might stop leaving the house at all. Greater isolation increases the risk of depression.

What can you do? Try to keep your Mom socially engaged with family and friends. Remind her how valued she is in your family. Encourage her to have a hearing evaluation and to use hearing devices, if she has a hearing loss. Dealing with her hearing problem could open the door to more enjoyable holiday celebrations for everyone!
